Q&A with Dr. Norleen
Q1: Is daily discharge normal? What causes it?
Daily discharge is perfectly normal and it actually keeps your intimate area healthy. It’s the fluid produced by glands lining the vagina and cervix.Q2: Why does the amount of discharge I have vary each month?
The amount of discharge you have changes according to your menstrual cycle. Most of the time, you will find more discharge before and after your period, and during ovulation.Q3: How do I tell the difference between normal and abnormal discharge?
Normal discharge is clear to slightly yellowish in colour. It doesn’t smell bad and most importantly, it doesn’t cause pain or itchiness. However, if you’re experiencing abnormal discharge, you will notice an increase in volume that is yellowish, greenish or brownish in colour. It also smells fishy and causes pain and itchiness. If you experience any of them, it’s best to consult a doctor.
Q4: How do I take good care of my intimate area?
Maintaining good hygiene is very important in keeping your intimate area healthy. Wash your intimate area regularly, dry it well and wear breathable panty liners daily. You should also avoid using scented soaps and gels, as chemicals in these products can irritate the sensitive v-zone area.
Q5: Is it safe to wear panty liners every day?
Of course! In fact, it is recommended to wear panty liners daily to stay fresh and protected. Just make sure the panty liner is breathable, like Kotex® Daily Liners, and remember to change regularly.
Q6: How often should I change my panty liner?
We recommend that you change your panty liner every 4-6 hours.
Q7: My skin down there is sensitive and gets irritated easily, how should I prevent this?
If you shave the hair down there, try to trim it instead. You should also wash it regularly with water, dry it well and avoid using scented soaps. If you still encounter problems like itchiness and rashes, visit a doctor.
Q8: Why do I get cramps during my period? Is something wrong?
It’s normal to have mild cramps during your period. It’s caused by uterine contractions where your uterus tightens and relaxes to allow blood to leave. The cramp may also start a day or two before your period. But if you suffer from severe menstrual cramps, it’s best to consult a doctor.
Q9: Will I get cancer from wearing pads and panty liners?
No, you will not get cancer from wearing pads and panty liners. These products are perfectly safe when you follow the recommended usage.
Q10: When should I see a doctor?
If you experience symptoms that are out of the ordinary like itchiness, discomfort, pain when urinating, irregular periods, or smelly, abnormal discharge you should make a trip to the gynecologist.
It is recommended to visit a gynecologist for the first time between the age of 13-15. Some prefer to wait until they have sexual intercourse for the first time, but there’s no need to wait. It’s better to start your regular checkups as soon as possible.
